An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is a digital entry for visa-exempt travelers who are flying to Canada. This remains valid for up to six months at a time and you can also use your eTA for 5 years or until it is granted by the Visa Officer. It is directly linked to your passport, and without an eTA, you may be denied entry into Canada when traveling by air. 

Who needs an eTA?

  • Visa-exempt traveler: You will need an eTA if you are a visa-exempted traveler and traveling by air.
  • If you are in transit through the Canadian airport and have a valid passport from the eligible visa-required countries.

Who does not require an eTA?

You do not require an eTA if:

  • You are a U.S. citizen, and you only need a U.S. valid passport on your arrival in Canada.
  • If you are a Canadian citizen or have dual citizenship. But you must show your valid Canadian passport when traveling to Canada.
  • If you are aCanadian Permanent Resident, you only need to provide your valid permanent resident (PR) card or document.
  • If you are traveling by sea or land, you don’t need to produce an eTA.
