Catagories:

There comes a time in everyone’s life when they must leave their home to chase their dreams and make their family proud. Moving away from your city can be tough but knowing you can visit your loved ones with a short flight somehow makes it a little bearable. However, this becomes more challenging when you are continents apart. But worry not, as this blog will help you to gather all the details on how to sponsor your family to Canada!

Canada has always been known as a highly popular destination for millions of immigrants coming in each year. Recognizing the important role immigrants play in developing the country’s economic system, the Canadian government has made substantial strides to support family reunification for them. If you are a permanent resident in Canada and wish to bring your family closer, you should know that certain family members may qualify to settle in Canada under the Family Class, eventually paving the way towards permanent residency.

Read on to learn more about the process and how to make it happen!

How to Sponsor your spouse, partner or child?

To sponsor your spouse, partner, or dependent children, you must be eligible and able to support them financially. You need to ensure they don’t need social assistance from the government. This commitment is known as an undertaking. This undertaking also means you agree to repay any provincial social assistance your sponsored family members receive during this time. Further, you and your sponsored family members must agree to certain responsibilities during the undertaking period. This is understood as a sponsorship agreement. This means that you’ll provide for their basic needs, and your sponsored family members will make every effort to support themselves.

How to Sponsor your spouse, partner or child?

Remember, when you apply, you’ll need to complete and sign a form that includes both the undertaking and the sponsorship agreement. Moreover, in most cases, there isn’t an income requirement to sponsor your spouse, partner, or dependent child. However, you do need to show that you have enough money to meet the income requirements if:

  • You’re sponsoring a dependent child who has one or more dependent children of their own, or
  • You’re sponsoring a spouse or partner who has a dependent child, and their dependent child has one or more children of their own.

The Financial Evaluation form instructions explain how much money you’ll need and how to fill out the form.  Your spouse, partner, dependent child, and their dependent children (if applicable) must provide all required forms and documents with their application to show they meet the eligibility requirements. They must also provide any additional information requested during processing, including medical exams and biometrics.

         P. S. – It is also important to note that to sponsor your spouse, partner or child, you must also apply to become a sponsor and the one who you want to sponsor, must apply for permanent residence.

How to Sponsor your Relatives?

Similarly, as above, financial support is important for sponsoring a relative to become a permanent resident in Canada as well. You must agree in writing to provide this financial support, starting from the date they become permanent residents and continuing for up to 20 years, depending on their age and your relationship to them. However, certain conditions may prevent you from being able to sponsor a relative, including:

  • Being in prison
  • Not paying alimony or child support payments
  • Declaring bankruptcy and not being discharged
  • Receiving social assistance for reasons other than disability
  • Failing to repay an immigration loan or missing payments
  • Violating previous sponsorship agreements
  • Conviction of a violent crime, offence against a relative, or sexual offence, considering details like the type of offence, how long ago it occurred, and whether a record suspension (formerly a pardon) was issued

You can sponsor a variety of relatives, if they are able to meet specific criterions. For example, you may sponsor an orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece, or grandchild if:

  • They are related to you by blood or adoption
  • Both their parents have passed away
  • They are under 18 years of age
  • They are single (not married or in a common-law or conjugal relationship)

You cannot sponsor an orphaned relative if:

  • One of their parents is still alive
  • Their parents’ whereabouts are unknown
  • They have been abandoned by their parents
  • They are being cared for by someone other than their parents while one or both parents are alive
  • Their parent is in jail or otherwise detained

You can also sponsor one relative, related by blood or adoption, of any age if you meet the following conditions:

  • You (the sponsor) do not have a living relative you could sponsor instead, such as a spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner, son or daughter, parent, grandparent, orphaned sibling, nephew, niece, or grandchild.
  • You do not have any other relatives (aunt, uncle, or any of the above-listed relatives) who are Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or registered Indians under the Indian Act.

If the relative you wish to sponsor has a spouse, partner, or dependent children who will accompany them to Canada, you must include them in the same sponsorship application as well.

P.S – Please note that you cannot sponsor someone who is inadmissible to Canada. This applies to sponsoring a spouse, partner, child, relatives, parents, and grandparents as well. Know more about How to sponsor your Parents and Grandparents to Canada?
