The IRCC announced in a press release on June 7, 2022, that the minister of immigration has enhanced the super visa program. This decision was made to better accommodate reunification with the parent and grandparents of immigrants living in Canada during COVID.
Let’s explore what this means for parents’ sponsorship in Canada and how you can apply for a super visa for your parents.
What is Super Visa?
A visitor visa only allows you to stay in Canada for up to six months. The IRCC offers a super visa to parents and grandparents of immigrants living in Canada, allowing them to stay longer than the visitor visa. The visa can be used multiple times to travel to Canada.
The Recent Changes To The Super Visa
Previously, the super visa only allowed parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for two years at a time. After the changes, which became effective on July 4, 2022, holders of the super visa can stay for up to 5 years every time they enter. Parents and grandparents with the super visa who are living in Canada can now also apply to have their stay extended by two years after their stay ends.
Parents and grandparents visiting their children in Canada only have the option to get medical insurance only from insurance providers based in Canada. The IRCC will designate certain international insurance companies to be able to provide insurance coverage to parents and grandparents who apply for the super visa in the future.
How to Apply for Super Visa For Your Parents and GrandparentsÂ
The IRCC has some recruitments that you and the super visa recipient must meet. You have to meet a minimum income requirement. The applicant (parent or grandparent) must also go through a medical examination and hold private insurance from certain providers. The benefits of the super visa have greatly improved, but the application process is still complex. A Canadian immigration lawyer can help.
